After researching many bloggers one of the things they have in common is recommending posting comments on other blogs related to your niche for traffic and exposure. This is known as the comment strategy.

Some bloggers say only post on “do-follow” blogs (which means that the blog allows your link to be a backlink to your blog).

A “no-follow” blog is when all links in the comments dont actually give you a backlink to your blog. Sometimes it is still worth while posting a great comment on a popular “no-follow” blog for the exposure.

When it comes to posting comments on other blogs it can be a good source of traffic and exposure if done correctly. The problem is, there are many people out there that are actually ruining the reputation of their blog by using the comment strategy incorrectly.

So here are 7 things to AVOID when using the comment strategy. When you avoid these you’re helping protect the reputation of your blog.

Avoid the following:

1. Automated comment spamming

This one should be obvious – there are plugins that prevent most of the spam comments anyway. Never use automated comments it’s obvious, it’s spammy and it ruins the reputation. The people who will click on your link will mainly be to see who the spammer is.

2. Linking to your blog even when it’s not relevant

I see a lot of comments that link to their blog everytime. Only do it when it’s relevant and you have actually provided some value in your comment. Only provide a link if you believe it will actually help the viewers who see your link. By posting on relevant blogs this should be easy to do.

3. Short comments

Write longer comments. Dont just write “Great post!” or “Thanks I got a lot out of it”. Put some thought into a lengthy post that will actually benefit people who read it.

4. Flaming

Flaming can cause you to harm your reputation and your blogs reputation, I recommend avoiding it.

5. Always the first to comment

This strategy can work really well if done correctly. I have seen this done and it can work great. Though be careful, sometimes when you are always the first to post it can get annoying. Test it!

6. Not adding value

This goes back to short comments. Make sure you actually read the whole blog post before you post a comment. Find ways to add value and include extra things the blog writer didn’t think of. By posting a well thought out post full of value, people are much more likely to check out your blog. They are also prequalified because they can already tell you know what you’re talking about because of the great comment you left.

7. Not Proofreading before you hit submit

Sometimes when typing fast it’s easy to make spelling mistakes. Personally I dont mind reading spelling mistakes – there are many people out there who absolutely hate it. So make sure you check your spelling and most importantly make sure your sentences make sense.

By avoiding these 7 points you will be able to maintain the reputation of your blog provided you have good content and are actually adding value.

Have fun and get more traffic to your blog!
